What St. Augustine means (354-430) when talking about “cited earthly” is probably the real world, with its institutions, history, rulers, happiness and misfortunes. It is built on self-love.  In contrast, the “city of God” refers to wisdom, peace, the unique worship of God, the Church, divine providence, and justice.
